Rory McIlroy, wife Erica ‘settled our differences’; the divorce is final

PINEHURST, NC – An attorney representing four-time major champion Rory McIlroy filed a motion Tuesday to voluntarily dismiss a divorce petition filed on behalf of the golfer in a Florida court last month.

McIlroy told The Guardian of London on Tuesday that he has reconciled with his wife of seven years, Erica Stoll. The case is closed, according to court records.

“There have been rumors about my health recently, which is unfortunate,” McIlroy said in a statement. “Replying to each rumor is a fool’s game. Over the past few weeks, Erica and I have realized that our best future is as a family together. Thank you, we have resolved our differences and look forward to a new beginning.”

McIlroy, the world’s third-ranked golfer, will try to end a nearly 10-year drought without a championship win at this week’s US Open, which begins Thursday at Pinehurst No. 2.

In a filing in Palm Beach County family court on May 13 — three days before the first round of the PGA Championship at Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Kentucky — McIlroy’s attorney, Thomas Sasser, wrote that the marriage had broken down beyond repair.

McIlroy asked that the parents be granted joint custody of their 3-year-old daughter and that a judge enforce the prenuptial agreement the couple signed on March 7, 2017.

Meanwhile, McIlroy confirmed the pending split with his manager, Sean O’Flaherty.

McIlroy met his wife at the 2012 Ryder Cup. They began dating two years later, after McIlroy ended his relationship with tennis star Caroline Wozniacki.

McIlroy and Stoll married in Ireland in 2017.
