Matias Vows Knockout In Paro Rematch
Subriel Matias says he will take Liam Paro out of a rematch if he gets the chance to fight him again after losing the IBF light welterweight title against Australia last Saturday night.
If Matias does get the chance to fight Paro again, it will be at home in Australia, and he will have to deal with his overbearing grip.

Hearn’s edition of Matias
Promoter Eddie Hearn says he will rebuild Matias in one fight and then look to put him in a world title fight. He didn’t say who, but it’s either Paro if he still holds the IBF title or Devin Haney who is the WBC champion.
Hearn didn’t sound too optimistic about Matias’ chances of fighting Paro again. He said Matias needs to move up to 147, but he’s not sure.
Matias is in the same boat as former WBC light welterweight champion Regis Prograis, who lost his title to Devin Haney last December and has not fought since. Hearn still hasn’t found anything for Prograis and the year is over.
Matias’ struggle in Paro’s style
Paro (25-0, 15 KOs) had Matias’ number in their fight at the Coliseo Juan Aubín Cruz Abreu in Manati, Puerto Rico. Liam used many combinations, moves, straight arms, and holding techniques to cut down Subriel’s hometown.
The referee deducted a point from Paro, 28, in the seventh round for landing a rabbit punch, and perhaps should have taken more points for a strong upper arm and catch that the Australian was doing during the fight.
Even though many points were drawn, Matias (20-2, 20 KOs) did not succeed because he could not shoot against this type of fighter.
Some guys can do well against Paro with his close combat; someone like Ryan Garcia would have a field day against that style, but not Matias. He can’t fight in close quarters and was letting Paro hold without paying him for this trick.
“I don’t feel like I’m in a position to say what I want, but if Eddie Hearn says, ‘You should go to Australia and match Liam Paro,’ I’m going to take Liam Paro out and do something I’ve never done. I can do this tonight,” said Subriel Matias in a press conference after the fight when he was asked if he wanted a rematch with Liam Paro after losing to him last Saturday night in Puerto Rico.
Hearn’s hope for Matias
“Perhaps that is one battle first and then victory. But the plan will be to rebuild and try to become a two-time champion,” said Hearn.
