Bronny James Addresses Doubters on Day One with Lakers

Bronny James being drafted by the Lakers has always attracted a lot of criticism and cries of racism.

James says he knows what’s being said about him online and faced criticism on his first official day on the job with the Lakers on Tuesday.

“I have seen it on social media and so on, and on the internet and so on and talking about it I may not deserve the opportunity,” he said. “But I’ve been dealing with things like this all my life. So nothing different, but greatly enhanced, for sure. But I will pass.”

Bronny also said that playing with his father was not part of his decision to declare for the draft this year, after spending one season in college.

“Rob (Pelinka) told me that there is a very good development program here, so I want to go in and put in my work and get better every day,” he said. “I never thought I would play with my father. But that’s always there to take your part. But that was not my focus.”

Lakers coach JJ Redick was quick to emphasize that Bronny’s place on the team has been earned, not given.

“Me and Rob didn’t give Bronny anything,” said Redick. “Bronny has got this. … Bronny earned this through hard work.”

James’ contract is expected to be finalized before the Lakers begin their Summer League campaign at the California Class on Saturday, according to ESPN’s Dave McMenamin.

Bronny’s agent, Rich Paul, and the Lakers negotiated a multi-year contract that would guarantee the incoming rookie a roster spot.

Paul had previously said that he would not agree to entertain Bronny.
