Disney World shakes up the system with shorter lines

Walt Disney World is making significant changes to its skip-the-line system three years after its last overhaul.

The company announced Tuesday that it is streamlining its Genie+ service, which allows users to pay for shorter lines for select rides and attractions at theme parks—and to return the feature before it starts charging for that benefit.

Starting July 24, Genie+ will be renamed the Lightning Lane Multi Pass—and users will also be able to book three shorter lanes per day throughout their trip up to seven days in advance. (Guests not staying at a Disney resort hotel will be able to book a trip in advance three days in advance.)

That should help guests get a better feel for their days at the theme parks, rather than staying up late (or waking up early) to book one short wait. Visitors will be able to book additional short lines in the park.

Most popular rides will continue to use a separate system for short waits, purchased individually. Those will be renamed from Individual Lightning Lane to Lightning Lane Single Pass. As before, they must be purchased per guest.

Disney did not announce pricing for the updated system. The cost of Genie+ currently varies depending on which park people are visiting, and how heavy the demand is for that day. Generally, visitors pay between $20 and $30. Guests will continue to receive digital downloads of select ride photos and videos as well.

Long, free waiting lines and virtual lines (the system used for popular attractions like Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance) will still be available on many rides. And the complementary features of the Genie service, which suggest rides and show wait times, will not change.

For guests visiting Disneyland, with different guest habits, the service names will change, but the way guests purchase, select and use Lightning Lane passes will not be changed.
