Today is America’s Independence Day, a celebration of our freedom from the British Empire and the tyranny of an empire thousands of miles away that rules our lives. The Revolutionary War that won us that freedom is not something that happened overnight, or something that just broke out because of one event or situation in a short time, it was the result of more than a century of strong government influence on the colonies living in North America.
In the same way, Bitcoin was not born out of a single event of the Great Financial Crisis. Just as colonies over a century of rising taxes, oppressive regulations, and general exploitation gave birth to the United States, decades of troubled economic and financial practices gave birth to Bitcoin.
While America and the struggles that led to its creation were based on an empire cut off by physical distance, Bitcoin was born out of problems caused by a cut that exists far beyond a single physical location. In the same way that the King and his advisers in England had a disconnected and impersonal view of the people on the other side of the Atlantic, today’s rulers have a disconnected and mechanical view of the people they govern despite the lack of physical distance. .
Politicians, administrators, bureaucrats, financial managers, none of them see the people they govern, or who have made decisions that significantly change the course of their lives or circumstances, as real people. They see numbers, they see statistics, they see different ideas and generalities. They see statistics and patterns that don’t seem to fit at first glance, and they make decisions based on that.
They have no empathy, no understanding of personal situations, or living conditions, or the problems they face because of the automaton like decision making in the halls of Congress, or the SEC building, or the bank.
So why do we look to these people for approval, or a path to success, or a glimmer of hope that they will reach that understanding? Imagine if ten years after gaining independence America had turned to England for help to achieve its success. Does that seem reasonable to you? Does that seem like a fruitful road to success and prosperity?
The answer should be a resounding no. They don’t care about you, me, or any of us.
So why are so many Bitcoiners looking to these parasites and narcissists for salvation? It is an indication of a complete loss of structure, the purpose of which Bitcoin was created. In some ways it is very similar to the current state of America as a nation, lost and disconnected from the purpose and goals for which it was originally founded. Freedom, determination, justice.
These people are not here to help us, they are not here to turn Bitcoin into a beacon of individual freedom and liberty. They are here to exploit, to destroy, to maintain the position they have in the world where they can remain isolated from the rest of us in a place of safety and comfort for themselves.
America was founded mainly because of the realization that England would not give them self-determination or freedom. The founding fathers saw that, so they set out to fulfill it on their own terms, by creating something new, something new the world had never seen before.
Bitcoin is no different, but instead of holding fast to those values and principles, Bitcoiners seem content to return to England for a free will. Asking for permission to gain their freedom.
This is a mistake. Bitcoin was created to be that new, independent, and innovative thing that the world has never seen before. It is built on independence as the basis of sovereignty, and self-determination. It is not something we ask permission to have, to build on, to use.
We need to stick to that, not go around appealing to politicians and regulators to find an easy road to “success,” which is actually failure covered in a cloak of coping. Bitcoin is here, it was put here without asking permission, without begging the Lord to approve, and here it will stay.
Whether it succeeds or fails does not come down to politicians, or regulators, or Wall Street money, it comes down to us.
