Murray: ‘I’d love the chance to play here again’

Andy Murray revealed details of his recovery from knee surgery at a press conference on Sunday and explained that he is still determined to be ready for one last Wimbledon.

“Obviously it’s been a tough ten days since Queen. He apparently had back surgery, which was not important. “I’ve been trying to do everything I can to try to get ready to start the tournament here,” said Murray. “I don’t know if that will be enough. I have been practicing for the past few days. I played a set today. It went pretty well, but I still don’t have 100 percent feeling and sensation in my leg yet.

“It’s getting better every day. As I said a few days ago, I want to give it every chance I can.”

The former number 1 player in the PIF ATP Rankings explained that he will probably make a decision on Monday evening about his participation in the tournament. The Scot added that there were positive signs.

“I don’t have back pain, which is obviously really good. “But the problem I had was that I had a large tumor, which was oozing, suppressing my nerves, which had not lost everything, but a lot of strength in my right leg,” said Murray. “That gets better. But it’s like if you go to sleep with a funny arm, you wake up with a dead arm. It’s like that feeling. But it continues for a long time because the vein has been pinched and slightly damaged for several days. How long it takes to restore its full working form is also impossible to say. For some people it takes months; for some people weeks.”

According to Murray, who is scheduled to face Tomas Machac in the first round and play doubles with his brother Jamie Murray, he was not taking a step back by returning to class.

“It was getting better every day,” Murray said. “I hope that will continue and it will be enough to be in court on Tuesday.”

Murray added: “Every day there are more and more opportunities for me to be able to play the right way. Doubly obvious, even though you cover less distance and a smaller court, you still need to be able to move explosively.

“If I continue to improve like I have been doing in the next three, four days, before the two matches start, I would have… played a set today against a top player. It was playing well. Hitting the ball well. You did very well.”

Murray hopes that every day his chances to play increase. Not only does he want to compete, but he plays at a level he’s happy with.

“I would love the opportunity to play here again,” Murray said. “That’s what I’m looking to get out of it. Whether after that I feel like that was the right thing to do, it was the right thing to do or not, I don’t know. But right now I feel like I want that opportunity.”

The two-time Wimbledon champion hopes to “maybe get a little closure” and play on Center Court again and feel the “buzz” of that opportunity.

“Last year, I didn’t plan for it to be my last year on the Tour. I wanted to come back and play again,” said Murray. “Though this year I have no plans to do that. My career is coming to an end and I want to get that chance to play here again.”
