Musetti survives Koepfer’s scare in Stuttgart

Lorenzo Musetti reached Wednesday’s third grass-court quarter-final at the BOSS OPEN, where he defeated Germany’s Dominik Koepfer 6-7 (9), 7-6 (5), 6-3.

The fifth-seeded Italian failed to convert five points in the first set and went 3/5 in the second break to stay alive in Stuttgart. He hit 15 winners in the third set to move ahead after two hours and 49 minutes.

“It was a really tough game,” said Musetti. “We saw tennis for two and a half hours. Dominik was playing really, really well… We fought until the end and I’m proud of myself.”

With his 13th win of the season, Musetti evened his Lexus ATP Head2Head series with Koepfer at 1-1. The number 30 player in the PIF ATP Rankings also reached the quarter-finals in Stuttgart last year and will aim to advance this week when he next plays Alexander Bublik who is the third player or finalist of the 2023 Next Gen ATP presented by the champion PIF Hamad. Medjedovic.

Musetti is chasing his first title of the season this week thanks to his good results in the 2024 fourth round runs in Miami and Monte-Carlo.

Defending champion Frances Tiafoe continued to defend her title with a 7-5, 7-6(5) victory against Germany’s Yannick Hanfmann.

Tiafoe, who defeated Struff in the title match last year to win his third ATP Tour title, saved all 11 break points he faced according to Infosys ATP Stats to prevail after one hour and 55 minutes.

The fourth-ranked American holds a modest 13-12 record this season. He will be hoping he can recapture his best form this week on German turf, when he next takes on Jack Draper or Marcos Giron.
