Pierre-Luc Dubois Traded Darcy Kuemper

We had not only one trade, but two trades today. The Los Angeles Kings and Washington Capitals get in on the action. Los Angeles sent Pierre-Luc Dubois to the Capitals for goaltender Darcy Kuemper.

Pierre-Luc Dubois has seven years left on his eight-year deal with an AAV of $8.5 million.

The Kings bought Dubois from the Winnipeg Jets last season and signed him to a massive eight-year contract. Meanwhile, Darcy Kuemper has three years at $5.25 million. That’s a $3.25 million savings for the Kings.

General Manager Rob Blake said at the end of the season that he did not want to buy Dubois out of his contract. As NHLRumors.com wrote, Dubois was a potential buyout candidate after the Stanley Cup Final.

Instead, Blake is coming off a bad contract and a player who didn’t fit the Los Angeles Kings’ scheme. With the Capitals, he will play with Alex Ovechkin, and hopefully, his numbers get better. This is Washington’s gambling game.

Dubois is now on his fourth team in the National Hockey League. He started his career with the Columbus Blue Jackets before being part of the Patrik Laine and Jack Roslovic deal to Columbus, Dubois to Winnipeg. His agent made it clear he didn’t want to stay in Winnipeg and moved to Los Angeles.

Dubois has a history of not doing well, especially when things don’t go his way.

Meanwhile, Amakhosi are trying to solve their goalscoring problems. Cam Talbot was not coming back, so they wanted an upgrade. Kuemper is an improvement on the Kings. He won the Stanley Cup with the Colorado Avalanche. But he had terrible numbers last season with the Washington Capitals.
