Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis says he doesn’t want to ignore Frank Martin and end up like Devin Haney, who was also beaten.
Tank’s Lesson Learned: Don’t Be Haney
Tank Davis (29-0, 27 KOs) notes that WBC light welterweight champion Haney talked a lot of trash before his fight with Ryan Garcia last April, ignoring him and losing.
Haney’s loss to Ryan didn’t seem to have anything to do with ignoring him; it was more than his case against a fighter who had greater strength, speed, and talent than him.
Prior to that fight, Haney had faced a lot of opposition outside of his match with Vasily Lomachenko, and was handed a controversial victory in that fight.
Haney’s Track Record
Many fans feel that Haney was never as good as fans thought. He is more than an example of a fighter who competes well below his weight class in terms of size and is carefully matched.
Although Haney won world titles in two divisions, he did so against the best, defeating George Kambosos Jr. and Regis Prograis. In some ways, Haney is this era’s version of Adrien Broner.
Broner is a fighter who floats between four weight divisions, winning world titles against a carefully selected group of losers. Haney seems to be from the same mold, expertly matched to hold world titles against weaker, vulnerable champions.
Devin was always bigger than his opponents, at 135 and 140. When Haney faced Ryan Garcia on April 20th, he didn’t have the size advantage, and we saw what happened.
“I never want to be someone like Devin [Haney]. Talk about all that trash, ignore my opponent, and get kicked out. So, I take Frank Martin seriously,” said Gervonta Davis on Kayla’s YouTube channel only about not ignoring the threat Frank Martin made to her on Saturday night.
Again, Haney’s loss to Ryan has nothing to do with his neglect because this was a big step for the San Francisco native. Haney trained for Ryan’s fight, but he couldn’t stand up to his power, and his habit of over-bending put him on fire all night. The worst thing a fighter can do against Ryan Garcia is win without stopping, as he has a short left hook to throw.

“You’re crazy to think that, but boxing; anything can happen,” said Tank, reacting when he was told that Martin said he was going to get him out. “I can’t say he’s crazy for thinking that, but he’ll have to try hard because I don’t sleep on the ground.”
What does Tank Davis expect Frank Martin to say? Of course, he will tell the media that he will take him out because he has to sell the fight. The event is shown on PBC on Prime Video Pay-Per-View, so Martin is doing his part to promote the event by predicting that they will win.
“He hasn’t slipped through the cracks. He fought for a big tournament,” said Gervonta when he was told that his coach, Calvin Ford, commented that Frank Martin slipped through the cracks and made a name for himself without fighting anyone.
Martin hasn’t been around long enough to fight the top guys, and that’s one reason he’s failed to do so.
His superiors were careful not to put him with a high-ranking person so that he would not be beaten. Tank shouldn’t have fought him if he didn’t want to, as this is a voluntary title defense, not a mandatory one.
“He entered the opportunity to fight me, but I think he is in the top 10. I think he is out of the top 10 in the WBA with the belt that I have,” said Tank about Martin. “So, really, I don’t think he slipped through the cracks. I think he put in the time and hard work and got to it at the right time.
“I am confident but in boxing you never know. So, I’m cautious,” said Tank Davis when asked how confident he is about winning on Saturday.
