Three of Vietnam’s five submarine internet cables are down By Reuters
HANOI (Reuters) – Three of Vietnam’s five submarine cables have collapsed, state media said at the weekend, marking the country’s second major outage in just over a year.
The problems with the three cables, which connect Vietnam with the United States, Europe and Asia, “have seriously affected Vietnam’s internet connection with the world,” the official Vietnam News Agency reported.
Vietnam is connected to the global Internet mainly through five submarine cables with a combined capacity of nearly 62 Tbps, according to data from FPT, one of the country’s top Internet providers.
It is not clear whether the three lines in question, which are mostly bandwidth facilities, are completely or partially down.
Internet service providers Viettel and VNPT, which invested in the cables, did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
The Vietnam News Agency said that internet users are finding it very difficult to access services with servers located abroad.
No time has been set for the cable removal, the report said.
Undersea internet cable problems are not uncommon in Vietnam, where at the beginning of last year all five of its cables were disrupted for weeks.
