The WBC moved quickly to fire Ryan Garcia following his use of anti-black and anti-Muslim slurs on social media.
World Boxing Council president Mauricio Sulaiman revealed Thursday that the sanctioning body has suspended Garcia, 25. Ryan (24-1, 20 KOs) has been suspended by the New York State Athletic Commission until next April.
WBC Condemns Apartheid
“We fight against any kind of discrimination,” Sulaiman told X. “I fear for Ryan’s well-being as he has refused many attempts to help us with mental health and substance abuse.”
Sulaiman did not say how the dismissal will affect Ryan, who has been suspended. Garcia has already stated that he is not interested in fighting for world titles, so the WBC firing him may be toothless.
When Ryan returns to the ring, it is not expected that he will fight for the belt. He can no longer make 140, and the 147-lb division has no big names other than Jaron Ennis, who is not a PPV attraction.
On social media, Ryan Garcia posted these words, which some considered an apology:
“I was walking to stop all the killings,” said Garcia. “I love everyone, I’m sorry if I offended you.”
In a recent training video, Ryan appears to have gained weight, and his father, Henry Garcia, expressed concern about his need for help with his drinking problem. Ryan responded to these comments by writing on social media that he has already given up alcohol. However, that does not explain his racist comments made on social media on Thursday.
Apology and Family Statement
“Our son has recently said things that are not in line with his character or our family’s beliefs. Our family does not unequivocally endorse any of the statements [Garcia] made about race or religion – this does not reflect who Ryan really is and how he was raised,” the family’s statement read. “Those who know Ryan can attest to this. Ryan has been open about his ongoing struggle with mental health over the years and as a family we are committed to making sure and encouraging him to get the help he needs to get through this challenging time and deal with his immediate and long-term health. “
