When he graduated from his school, Nadal revealed the legacy discussion with Federer

Spanish tennis legends Rafael Nadal and Carlos Moya gave motivational speeches on Wednesday at the Rafa Nadal Academy for Movistar’s graduation. The 92-time tour-ranking title list Nadal shared with 52 readers about an influential conversation he had with his rival and friend Roger Federer.

Although Nadal and Federer are considered two of the greatest players ever to touch a tennis racket, the 38-year-old Spaniard revealed that he and the Swiss agree that there is something more important that they want to be remembered for.

“A few months ago I had the opportunity to visit the Dolomites in Italy with my friend and rival Roger Federer. There in the mountains, we had a very nice conversation about a word that I think is very important: inheritance,” Nadal said in Spanish.

“Roger and I both agree on something that we believe is very important. How would we like to be remembered in a few years? How do we want future generations to think of us? We are both sure of our answers. It is good that our achievements, our qualifications and our records are recognized, but as the years go by someone may come along and do something better.

“What is important is what will always be remembered. So, Roger and I agree that we would like to be remembered as good people. We live in a society that emphasizes the i what as well as now above all else. But I would like to highlight the importance of How. When you are at university or on the tennis court, occasionally ask yourself, ‘Would I like my classmates to remember me? And my teachers? My friends?’ I can tell you to try and make an impact in your area, but I prefer the word leaders. People around you should see you as a person to be copied because of their values.”

Moya, a former No. 1 in the PIF ATP rankings, served as the institution’s guest speaker, following in the footsteps of WTA star Iga Swiatek, who delivered the keynote address 12 months ago. Moya shared thoughtful advice on the importance of working hard when it matters most.

“Throughout my career I have been able to achieve very important goals. Goals I couldn’t even imagine as a child. Yes, it’s easy to watch players win trophies, but no one sees what’s behind it, all the work you have to do every day,” said Moya.

“The days when you don’t feel like going to practice, going to the gym, studying. If you push yourself in those moments, these are the moments that pay off. These are the times when if you do it, it will take you to the next level and help you grow in whatever you want to do. So pay attention to those times.”

Nadal and Moya are not the only number 1 winners to speak in front of this year’s graduating class. Federer delivered an unforgettable commencement speech at Dartmouth University on Sunday, discussing several important life lessons.
