Interim WBC junior middleweight champion Serhii Bohachuk and Vergil Ortiz are set to fight on August 10 in Las Vegas.
This is not Vergil’s usual type of opponent, and there is a good chance he will lose this fight against Bohachuk (24-1, 23 KOs). Even if he loses to Ortiz, he will gain valuable experience going forward, as long as his Golden Boy promoters continue to match him hard after this.
If Vergil is a work of hype, as some fans think, Bohachuk is the antidote to prove it. In the end, that would be good because Vergil could start from scratch and rebuild the right way against quality opposition. That’s what he remembered when he was working.
Ortiz’s Complete Record: The Mirage?
Some would argue that Vergil Ortiz has been caged by promoters his entire career, protected, but that only ends on August 10th when he faces Bohachuk.
The winner of this fight will be able to challenge for the WBC title against Sebastian Fundora vs. The winner is Errol Spence.
Serhii Bohachuk, 29, defeated Brian Mendoza by a twelve-round unanimous decision on March 30 to capture the interim WBC junior middleweight title.
Ukrainian Bohachuk dominated Mendoza with his high volume striking and looked impressive throughout the fight, dominating the struggling Tim Tszyu and knocking out Sebastian Fundora.
It’s a dangerous fight for Ortiz, who has fought mostly middle-of-the-pack opposition throughout his eight-year professional career, making it difficult to know how good he is.
The 26-year-old Ortiz (21-0, 21 KOs) will be fighting the talented 154-pounder for the first time since moving up a weight class in January.
Ortiz fought twice at 154, defeating Thomas Dulorme and Fredrick Lawson. None of those fighters are close to the talent level of Bohachuk (24-1, 23 KOs).
Fans Are Not Laughing
Fans on social media are not happy that Ortiz will not fight on the August 3 card, which is titled Terence Crawford vs. Israil Madrimov at BMO Stadium in Los Angeles.
Originally, Vergil Ortiz was supposed to fight former WBO junior middleweight champion Tim Tszyu on that card, but Tim had to pull out due to a cut that hadn’t healed from his March 30 fight.
Although Vergil looked good, beating fighters Michael McKinson, Brad Solomon, and Egidijus Kavaliauskas, he didn’t fight any A-level guys. That’s bad for promoter protection.
Is Ortiz For Real?
They’re building a fighter with a 21-0 record, but you never know what you’re going to get if they stop protecting him with wolves the first time. Hopefully Ortiz Jr. will deal with another injury or illness during training camp that prevents him from taking this tough first test against Bohachuk.
It won’t be shocking if Bohachuk exposes Vergil Ortiz, showing that he is not as good as boxing fans thought. This is a big step up in class for 26-year-old Vergil, as he is still very young and inexperienced, thanks to his promoters carefully matching him.
